Stu’s Reviews- #717- Book – “Chaos”- Iris Johansen

Title: Chaos

Review: Hmmm…have you ever wonder what the designation “NY times bestseller” actually means? This work is from a writer who has appeared on that list literally dozens and dozens of times, and has (according to the jacket) a massive worldwide following and has been translated into a billion languages. Must be pretty hot shit, no? Well, not so much. To be honest, I wanted to dump this book after ten pages, but was stranded in San Diego with nothing else to read and then got captivated by its wild story, which is, indeed, very enticing. Chaos is a good word, for the story……and…… for her writing. I suppose it is really not all that bad if you are thinking along the lines of of college sophomore essays, but frankly, pretty bad….and yet…. hard not to want to read this stuff. The narrative of the novel seems written as a long dialog, which is one long-ass play. The characters’ lack depth, the dialog is pithy and context non-existent…. but it does have bit of a ferocious conclusion, and Iris does write a pretty steamy sex scene. That’s all I got- your choice.

Stu’s Reviews- #716- Film – “The Whale”

Genre: Film

Grade: A

Notable People: Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, Directed by: Daniel Kwan and David Aronofsky

Title:  The Whale

Review: wow- Fraser won the Best Actor Oscar of 2022 for this extraordinarily moving portrayal of a reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher who tries to restore his relationship with his teenage daughter before he eats himself to death. Filled with metaphors and allusions to Moby Dick (for obvious reasons) and played out by four wonderfully woven actors on a theater-like one room set. The movie was written and adapted by Samuel Hunter from his 2012 play of the same name. Fraser is simply unrecognizable in the role of a lifetime. I watched this film on a flight back from san Diego and was so engrossed that I hid my laptop out to finish watching it up thru landing to catch the last 15 minutes of it. Not to be missed.

Title:  Everything Everywhere All at Once

Review: Oh boy, Oh My, what to about this most unusual offering. Went to giant big screen in San Diego, knew it had won Oscar for Best Picture this year and a bunch more (most awarded film of all time!), knew it was controversial,-maybe sci-fi…and otherwise knew nothing about it. So, Wikipedia summarizes the film with: “follows Evelyn Wang, a Chinese- American immigrant who, while being audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse”. Well, I am not really sure what that means, but I do know: I was ready to walk out on what appeared to be a Bruce Lee Kung-Fu rave up after 20 minutes, the film is beyond complex and surprisingly witty, the acting is magnificent with all the main characters portraying a dozen or so versions of themselves, the costumes, sets, action sequences, stunts and editing are unreal, we all left the  show shaking our heads in disbelief, and hours later could not stop discussing it and trying to figure it out…and it may be the most uniquely bizarre film of all time. I just can’t rate this film, though I think it is certainly worth a go, and should likely be seen on the big screen. A half hour shorter would have been helpful, but who can tell minds like these how to make a film. Think Bagels and Racoons……

Stu’s Reviews- #714- Film – “The Good Liar”

Genre: Film

Grade: B+/B

Notable People: Helen Mirren, Ian McKellen, Jim Carter, Russell Tovey, Directed by: Bill Condon

Title:  The Good Liar

Review: a career con artist (McKellen) meets a wealthy widow (Mirren)online, and then discovers that his plan to steal her fortune has unexpected roadblocks. This was a cross country flight movie for me, which kept me entertained and confused throughout. Nothing great and somewhat familiar, but Mirren and McKellen are a hard pair not to want to watch. Mirren may be the most gracefully aging person I have come across-she is striking.

Stu’s Reviews- #714- Book – “World of Curiosities”- Louise Penny

Genre: Book

Grade: A-

Notable People: Louise Penny

Title: A World of Curiosities

Review: Penny’s 18th and most recent addition to the masterful Gamache series is another thoughtful, reflective and extremely observant work that also happens to feature an extraordinarily complex mystery. Gamache is a top ten literary character in my view, and the books are treatises on Canadian culture, history and national angst (who knew they had any?); always riffing on the most significant events in Canadian, and specially, Quebecois history, that we have no idea about here down under. This one wandered a bit at first telling the Gamache/-Jean-Guy origin story, but got stronger as it went on and is a master work on the role of forgiveness in modern life. Penny’s’ acknowledgment sections are immediately personal and unlike any in the industry-make you feel lie you know her as she relates her struggles and illuminations in writing each book. Did you know she has had  a number one NY times bestseller-co-wrote with Hillary Clinton? Finally, I have caught up with the series and will now have to join the line in waiting for next installment.

Stu’s Reviews- #713- TV Series – “The Recruit”- Netflix -1 Season

Genre: TV Series

Grade: B+

Notable People: Noah Centineo, Laura Haddock, Fivel Stewart, Colton Dunn, Kayla Zander, Created by Alexi Hawley

Title: The Recruit

Review: Fledgling lawyer joins the CIA only to become involved in international drama and the extrication of a very complicated Russian Mob asset from the clutches of the long forgotten Cold War. Haddock, an English actress, is unrecognizable and wonderful as the Russke chanteuse. Centineo is just naive seeming enough to be dragged all over the world in utter disbelief and with persistent charm. Not great- but engaging. Second season on the way.

Stu’s Reviews- #712- Book – “Acqua Alta”- Donna Leon

Genre: Book

Grade: A-

Notable People: Donna Leon

Title: Acqua Alta

Review: Book number 5from Leon’s’ internationally bestselling, and Magnifico series featuring Commissario Guido Brunetti. In what many critics considered one of the finest in the series, Venice braces for the onslaught of “acqua alta”-the rising waters from torrential rains that come to Venice from Africa during the late winter of each year (Who Knew?!). You cannot read this book and not feel thoroughly cold and drenched-takes you right there along with another tantalizing murder and mayhem story featuring, as always, the unusual water bound landscape and culture of Venice, opera, fine arts, antiquities and the endless, stoic social commentary on the complexity of life in Italy. Totally absorbing and impossible to put down -ready for #6.

Stu’s Reviews- #711- TV Series – “The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem”- Netflix -1 Season-English plus Hebrew/Yiddish/Arabic with sub titles

Genre: TV Series

Grade: A-

Notable People: Michael Alona, Irit Kaplan, Swell Ariel Or, Hila Saada, Tom Hagi, Created by Oded Davidoff

Title: The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem

Review: Based on the best-selling Israeli novel by Sarit Levy, Yes dram, as Israeli production company, produced this as daily show with 44 episodes in the first two seasons. Netflix adapted it into on long season of 20 lengthier episodes. The series tells the captivating story of the Armoza family, intertwined with the history of Palestine during Ottoman rule and the British colonial empire It explores the family’s fortunes during the subsequent periods of depression and war. The series takes place simultaneously on two timelines wherein present and past stories are presented alternately (from 1919 thru 1942- encapsulating the role of both world Wars). Beautifully filmed, with intense dialog and action, the show dramatizes a very complex family living in very complex times and is wonderfully historical. Kaplan shines as the detestable “Bubby” and the cast is generally dead on. It won’t make you fond of the British rule. I found this show to get better and better as it progressed. As second season is in the works in Israel to pick up in the post war 1940’s and into the founding of the Jewish state.

Genre: TV Series

Grade: A

Notable People: Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jean Yoon, Andrea Band, Simu Liu, Created by Ins Choi and Kevin White

Title: The Outlaws

Review: I’m not sure what to say about this show, except it may be the funniest show ever on TV; a cult favorite in Canada that depicts a Korean family that run a convenience store in Toronto. Lee and Yoon are cult legends in Canada and Liu has become a rising star off his turn in this show. If you are mostly a drama fan and need an occasional half hour break- don’t miss this. Lee, as the father (Appa) is a modernized, Korean, Canadian take on Archie bunker, but in a good way. One of long line of shows created by Kevin White (Trailer Park Boys, Reservation Dogs) it is brilliantly written and acted. We loved this show so much we watched it over a 2-year period and stopped when we got to the last episode, since we did not want it to end. Six months later, we went back to watch the finale and still couldn’t do it- so just started over from the beginning. Brilliant.

Stu’s Reviews- #709- TV Series – “Women at War”- Amazon Prime -1 Season (French- with sub-titles)

Genre: TV Series

Grade: A-

Notable People: Audrey Fleurot, Julie de Bona, Camille Lou, Sofia Essaidi. Created by Cecile Lorne

Title: Women at War

Review: Wonderfully conceived and executed story of four complex and flawed, but extraordinarily courageous woman in France, in 1914, at the start of WWI. The weaving of the four stories and the ultimate linkage between the characters is exceedingly well done, and dramatically set gains the back drop of invasion and chaos, standing out all the more for their astonishing achievements. Fleurot (The French Villages) stands out in her role as tortured prostitute/conflicted mother- and de Bona is a find as the mother superior torn between God, love and war. A one shot miniseries unlikely to return, well worth the watch.
