Stu’s Reviews- #722- Book – “Quietly in Their sleep”- Donna Leon

Genre: Book

Title: Quietly in Their Sleep

Review: Number six in the wonderful Commisario Brunetti series, is a 1997 entry in the fabled Venice world of gutter politics, rampant corruption and endless humanity. Brunetti takes on the mother church and nursing home abuse in this one, which provides a primer on the unusual life of Venice. Filled with historical, social and economic contexts along with a bizarre murder mystery, Brunetti, as always, plow through the chaos with dignity, élan and aplomb. Great series.

Title: Blood Money

Review: The Jane Whitefield series is THE BOMB. What a fascinating character- a Native American woman whose sees spirits and helps people disappear from the world rather than be obliterated by the clutches of very bad guys. Every installment is a treasure with Perry’s wonderful prose style and captivating stories. This one wreaks havoc on the entire family structure of the modern Mafia as Jane reluctantly leaves retirement and marital bliss with her long suffering and beloved husband, to help a young girl inadvertently caught up in their murderous sights. Rich, rich reading-hard to put down-transcends he genre. This 1999 publication is the fifth of nine in the series- but still going as of 2021. Perry also writes several other series I will be pursuing. Many thanks to my old friend and literary mentor, Berms, for the turn-on.

Title: Alaska Daily

Review: Swank stars as recently disgraced reporter, Eileen Fitzgerald, who leaves her high-profile New York life behind to join a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage, Alaska, on a journey to find redemption. Surprisingly intriguing for a network (ABC) show and Swank really digs into the role, after initially being so overtly pedantic as to be a put off. The ensemble cast is really good and the show gets on serous issues for native American peoples in Alaska- which feels very place sensitive except for mostly being filmed in British Columbia. Well written, witty and hard hitting. No doubt for a second season.

Title: Rose Gold

Review: Unlike my last review that had very nice story written but a very mediocre writer, Mosley elevates each story, regardless of subject or genre, into a work of art. This entry picks up the Easy Rawlins series in LA, where it started post war and is now in the height of the 60s cultural revolution. Aside from being a great mystery, Mosely and Rawlins take head on the issues of race in America, in a way that is hard to ignore. Brilliantly crafted with a narrative that transports you to the explosive sense of late 60s Tinsel town. Mosley began writing the series 25 years ago and then went on hiatus for a decade but resumed few years ago. If you haven’t had the Easy Rawlins experience, you should.

Stu’s Reviews- #717- Book – “Chaos”- Iris Johansen

Genre: Book

Grade: B/B-

Title: Chaos

Review: Hmmm…have you ever wonder what the designation “NY times bestseller” actually means? This work is from a writer who has appeared on that list literally dozens and dozens of times, and has (according to the jacket) a massive worldwide following and has been translated into a billion languages. Must be pretty hot shit, no? Well, not so much. To be honest, I wanted to dump this book after ten pages, but was stranded in San Diego with nothing else to read and then got captivated by its wild story, which is, indeed, very enticing. Chaos is a good word, for the story……and…… for her writing. I suppose it is really not all that bad if you are thinking along the lines of of college sophomore essays, but frankly, pretty bad….and yet…. hard not to want to read this stuff. The narrative of the novel seems written as a long dialog, which is one long-ass play. The characters’ lack depth, the dialog is pithy and context non-existent…. but it does have bit of a ferocious conclusion, and Iris does write a pretty steamy sex scene. That’s all I got- your choice.

Title: A World of Curiosities

Review: Penny’s 18th and most recent addition to the masterful Gamache series is another thoughtful, reflective and extremely observant work that also happens to feature an extraordinarily complex mystery. Gamache is a top ten literary character in my view, and the books are treatises on Canadian culture, history and national angst (who knew they had any?); always riffing on the most significant events in Canadian, and specially, Quebecois history, that we have no idea about here down under. This one wandered a bit at first telling the Gamache/-Jean-Guy origin story, but got stronger as it went on and is a master work on the role of forgiveness in modern life. Penny’s’ acknowledgment sections are immediately personal and unlike any in the industry-make you feel lie you know her as she relates her struggles and illuminations in writing each book. Did you know she has had  a number one NY times bestseller-co-wrote with Hillary Clinton? Finally, I have caught up with the series and will now have to join the line in waiting for next installment.

Title: Acqua Alta

Review: Book number 5from Leon’s’ internationally bestselling, and Magnifico series featuring Commissario Guido Brunetti. In what many critics considered one of the finest in the series, Venice braces for the onslaught of “acqua alta”-the rising waters from torrential rains that come to Venice from Africa during the late winter of each year (Who Knew?!). You cannot read this book and not feel thoroughly cold and drenched-takes you right there along with another tantalizing murder and mayhem story featuring, as always, the unusual water bound landscape and culture of Venice, opera, fine arts, antiquities and the endless, stoic social commentary on the complexity of life in Italy. Totally absorbing and impossible to put down -ready for #6.

Title: The Face Changers

Review: Number four in Perry’s acclaimed Jane Whitefield series, and each one gets better. Perry is a master of the suspense genre and Jane is a character you can hardly believe someone could make up.: an unobtrusive lifelong resident of the Seneca nation around the Buffalo area, who had led a secret life for two decades, as a magician at helping deserving fugitives permanently disappear (in a good way, not into the cement). The books’ complex narratives on the incredible detail minutia involved in this extraordinary undertaking, while still providing wonderful character studies and great locales. This one is a mad chase by both the good guys and the bad guys back and forth across the country. Really hoping Perry (who is a fabulous writer of other genres, as well) will stay with this series forever. Titillating and Rapturous.

Title: Little Green

Review: In 2007’s Blonde Faith, set in 1967, Easy Rawlins drove drunkenly off a cliff in what Mosley indicated was likely his last appearance. Now, after two months of sliding in and out of consciousness, Easy is reborn, beginning the long journey back to the living, in Mosley’s superb 12th mystery featuring his iconic sleuth. Mosley fans were pining for the resurrection of Rawlins.  Their dreams have come true…. Mosley returns here to doing what he does best: an intriguing set of mysteries set in the historical context and struggle of race in America; in Mosley/ Rawlins case, that being post WWII LA, and, in the case of this masterful book-late in the Summer of Love. Mosley gives us strong correlations between the counter culture and the movement for civil rights, and, as always, spins a compelling yarn. The 12th of this series, originating in 1990, and still going strong, with three additions since then. My only confusion is how old is Easy Rawlins, the WWII vet now? Explosive writing, extraordinary characters (Ray “Mouse “Alexander …one for the ages) and an incredible ability to make African -American experience more accessible to us all. Great, great stuff. Mosley is a legend.

Genre: Book

Grade: B+

Notable People: Robert Galbraith

Title: The Ink Black Heart

Review: Galbreath (JK Rowland) is a superb writer and the characters are so engaging and the stories so complex that it is hard to not be totally impressed with this series; of which this is the fifth entry. Now detective partners, Strike and Robin, follow the dark streets of London in pursuit of the solving of case even Scotland Yard can’t keep up with. The books are full of world detailed info and underlying social commentary with wicked sly humor at times. Now the down sides for me: this book is over a 1000 ages, as they all are; it’s now to the point where you just want to see the two main characters get over it and finally do the nasty, instead of obsessing about it for thousands of pages; and this book is the deepest dive into the dark web, the world of cult adult cartoons and associated video games, as any I have read. There are whole chapters that are only twitter dialog boxes- all of which does not hold the most interest for a non- social media user like me, though I know the focus on social media and its pitfalls is inherently timely. On balance, these are really fine books, though this one did not enthrall me as the first four had.
